Final Reflections on Myself, My Portfolio, and the Buena Vista University School Counseling Program ShaNell A, graduate school reflection paper. Young Fall Reflection on Myself Wow, where do I begin?

Ill start here, I am a 38 year old African-American female born to a mother addicted to drugs, and a father who supplied the world with those drugs, graduate school reflection paper.

I along with. I grew up feeling worthless, and unloved. Finding myself pregnant at 15 years old, becoming a mother at 16 I dropped out of highschool. I went to the local alternative school where I could take my son with me and attend classes half days. I got a job and a GED, because that was what I saw as my future.

Graduate school was never in my view; so I thought. Fast forwarding to JanuaryI entered my first class at BVU, filled with mixed emotions about myself in this new arena, however to prideful to let anyone know that I felt like I was way out of my league.

From a personal standpoint I was scared and worried if I could do this. I remember making a statement to my professor at that time, something along the lines of I am not a masters level writer, after receiving an assignment that required me to write in APA style. In grad school I had to ask what APA writing was. I know that this sounds weird coming from a person who had to have a bachelors degree to even get into the program.

The key point here is that I started this journey doubting that I could do it because I was never set up in life to believe that I could. I knew that I wanted it and I was gonna work my hardest to make it happen. I had lots of apprehensions about my cohort. They were all young folks that appeared to have way more knowledge than me. I can graduate school reflection paper telling them during introductions that I was going to be a amazing counselor because I have lived the experiences we will deal with as counselors, graduate school reflection paper.

I was not sure that I would fit in, but boy was I wrong. By our second class you could see our friendships starting, graduate school reflection paper, I was graduate school reflection paper more, hell I was becoming a leader to our group. By our second class I was learning from them and vice versa.

I was astonished by the lack of resources in the small schools. My eyes were opened to how blessed we were in the bigger. school districts. I enjoyed exchanging stories about our schools. I looked forward to seeing them every 8 weeks, graduate school reflection paper. Reflecting over these 2 years at BVU I grew from a person with little internal confidence, lack of trust in the process, to a person who was a leader in the process. I was getting it done, I was writing like a graduate, student, I was winning, and I was gaining confidence every time through my peers.

During these two years I changed jobs, I went from a Family Empowerment Coordinator to a Student Support Liaison. This was perfect time for this change to take place. I was so excited because everything that I did in our graduate class I could practice or incorporate into my job which assisted in my learning.

It almost felt like my new job was an intervention that I was placed into positively impact my graduate studies per say.

That is exactly what happened. Professionally I was was winning also. Reflecting on MyPortfolio The graduate Portfolio was a very labor intensive project to complete however, I fell it was very worth it.

My graduate Portfolio is a great way to display not only what I completed and learned, but it represents what I am capable of. I showed myself what I would do by completing it and this degree and now the world can see it as well. I believe that every artifact that was used to substantiate my competency is a direct, graduate school reflection paper, and adequate reflection of my heart for this field; my heart for the children.

I poured me into every piece. Graduate school reflection paper draw attention to the interview project that I had to complete that challenged me to interview 2 different people in different areas of life basically. I chose a lesbian couple, graduate school reflection paper, and a interracial marriage.

I left this assignment a changed. person with a different mindset regarding these topics. I have learned so much during these 2 years that make living my life easier. The portfolio shows that. Reflections of the Buena Vista University School Counseling Program I thoroughly enjoyed my BVU experience. I had some great professors who are now friends and lifelong fellow counselor connections. I was pleased with the level of knowledge that each one of them possessed and imparted to us.

All of the classes that we took were significant to this field of counseling, graduate school reflection paper, however I really believe that the face to face counseling taped sessions we did were the most significant for graduate school reflection paper. I consider myself to be a great listener, but to learn the principles behind counseling and how to put those in play as you counsel was great for me.

I never knew how much I fidgeted or interrupted people when they are talking, or passed my own beliefs or passed judgement on people until we did those sessions. Please keep those, because they made me conscious of those flaws.

If i had any complaints about BVU it would be this one thing, many times when starting a new class during my 2 years we had incorrect syllabuses. Syllabuses that had the prior teacher's name on it and last terms dates. I would have liked to see that process take place a bit more carefully that it did. AS a recommendation, I spoke to Mrs.

Ogren this graduate school reflection paper about adding an academic component to this program. I feel that the one piece that i wish i had more training on was the academic understanding that a school counselor should have as it relates to making sound effective interventions for students that is driven by that data. These are valuable evaluative tools that are used. to monitor student progress, graduate school reflection paper. Maybe adding a class that goes over that that data or graduate school reflection paper like that would be great, However, other than that I graduate school reflection paper recommend this program to anyone.

This program made becoming a graduate student as a working mother, with a full time job a reality. I will forever be grateful for this opportunity. Open navigation menu. Close graduate school reflection paper Search Search.
